AANIIN (Greetings) From Our Land Manoominike Giizis- or the wild rice moon is upon us here at White Earth, and the lakes and rivers welcome our people to their waters, while our lands are abundant with one of the best corn harvests ever. We are thankful that we are able to continue our thousand year old way of life.

We work to continue, revive, and protect our native seeds, heritage crops, naturally grown fruits, animals, wild plants, traditions and knowledge of our indigenous and land -based communities; for the purpose of maintaining and continuing our culture and resisting the global, industrialized food system that can corrupt our health, freedom, and culture through inappropriate food production and genetic engineering.

The mission of the White Earth Land Recovery Project is to facilitate recovery of the original land base of the White Earth Indian Reservation, while preserving and restoring traditional practices of sound land stewardship, language fluency, community development, and strengthening our spiritual and cultural heritage.

White Earth Wild Rice Harvest: Manoominikewaag Manoomin, “The Food That Grows on the Water,” Harvest Season 2013: Manoominike Giizis (The Ricing Moon) is a time of age-old traditions filled with memories of family and friends, and the memories of those before us who have harvested Manoomin, or wild rice, in the same way for thousands of years in our Anishinaabe Akiing–the land of our people. As we watch the Manoomin sway from side to side as we enter the canoe, it’s as if they dance to the excitement shared by generations. Manoomin is grown naturally in the lakes and rivers of Northern Minnesota and is hand-harvested and wood parched by tribal members using traditional methods.
